Rust is the quiet killer of used cars, and it is uniquely dangerous because the worst of it happens where buyers never look. A car can present beautifully above the waist while its sills, subframe and brake lines corrode underneath, and by the time the damage shows on the surface it is often well advanced. In a country like Hungary, where roads are salted every winter, understanding corrosion is one of the most important parts of buying a used car well.

Where rust forms
Corrosion concentrates in the places that trap water and see little airflow. The common sites are the sills and inner sills, the wheel arches and their inner lips, the subframe and its mounting points, the suspension turrets, mounts and spring seats, the brake and fuel lines, the jacking points, the boot and spare-wheel floor, and the bottoms of the doors. These are the cavities and seams where moisture, road dirt and salt collect and sit, and they are where an inspection looks first.
The pattern matters because it tells you where to concentrate. A little surface rust on an exposed bracket is very different from corrosion at a suspension mount or along a brake line, and knowing the difference between a place where rust is merely unsightly and a place where it is structural is the foundation of judging a used car's corrosion honestly.

Surface rust versus structural rot
Surface rust is the light, orange corrosion on the skin of a panel or bracket, and on a non-structural part it is usually cosmetic — something to note rather than fear. Structural rot is different: it affects the load-bearing parts of the car, and even a relatively small amount in the wrong place can make a car unsafe. The key question on any corrosion is therefore not just how much there is, but where it is and what it is holding together.
That distinction is why we probe rather than glance. Healthy metal feels firm and solid under finger-and-thumb pressure; metal that has rotted through flexes, flakes or gives way, and a corrosion tool or even a firm press can reveal a hole where the surface looked intact. A panel can carry heavy cosmetic rust with little safety effect, while a small breach at a suspension mount is a serious matter.
Why it fails a roadworthiness test, and the salt factor
Roadworthiness rules treat corrosion strictly in what are called prescribed areas — the load-bearing parts to which braking, steering, suspension and seat-belt components are mounted, plus the structure within a set distance of those mountings. In those areas, corrosion fails the test if it has holed the metal, if the metal does not feel firm, or if a check creates a hole. Brake pipes are judged separately: a rigid pipe fails when corrosion has reduced its wall thickness by about a third, and flaking metal or green and white deposits indicate active corrosion.
Salt is what turns a slow problem into a fast one. The salt spread on Central European roads through winter dramatically accelerates underbody corrosion, especially in the hidden cavities that received minimal protection when the car was built. This is why a car that has spent its winters on salted roads needs its underbody checked far more carefully than its shiny paint suggests.
Hidden repairs and what an inspector checks
Corrosion is sometimes hidden rather than fixed, so we are wary of fresh underseal, underbody paint or filler that conceals rot, of mismatched or recent painting, and of bubbling under the paint that signals rust pushing up from beneath. A suspiciously fresh-looking underbody on an older car is a reason to look harder, not to relax.
